Tin Hinane is the founding mother of the tuaregs. The stories and the songs that have been carried out by my ancestors, the men of the desert, describe her as a tall and extremely beautiful lady with pale skin, a narrow nose and intense big eyes. Her perfect face expresses both beauty and authority (1). Her story was transmitted through the oral tradition as this is the way (through songs, story telling and poetry) tuaregs  keep their history alive in spite of the tifinagh, tuareg writing.

During the 1990’s rebellion, the guitar played a key role in the transmition of the demands of tuareg rights. Nowadays it serves the economical and cultural development. We have to build our region respecting our traditions and culture: A society without culture is like a tree without branches. This begins with the learning of the language. Maybe our kids might be able to write our history one day….

Kel Assouf’s goal is not only that of music. We would like to raise awareness in the western world about the preservation of the tuareg culture. The tuareg have a rich cultural patrimony that is threatened to disappear. This is the reason why this Album is dedicated to the history of our ancestors and leaders: the queen Tin Hinane, Kaocen, cheaf of resistance against the French colonization in 1916, Alla ag Albachir, resistant in l’Adrar of Ifoghas in the 1960’s, Fihrun ag Amansar, Moussa ag Amastan and finally, Mano Dayak, resistance leader in the 1990’s. In order to remember their history and fight, we have to spread their message!
